GREENER FUTURES FUND:
PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
Transforming Waste into Creative Opportunity Across Luton

Through the Greener Futures Fund, S.H.A.C.E (Simon-Hartman Academy of Creative Excellence) has delivered a series of connected creative programmes exploring how recycled materials can be transformed into meaningful design outcomes through hands-on learning.
Working in collaboration with the UK Centre for Carnival Arts (UKCCA), and supported by London Luton Airport and the Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation (BLCF), this initiative has enabled the delivery of sustainable, community-focused creative programmes across Luton.
OUR APPROACH
At the heart of this work is a simple but powerful idea:
to reimagine waste as a creative resource.
Using reclaimed materials, including denim from Levi’s jeans salvaged from landfill, participants are introduced to sustainable design through making, experimentation, and storytelling. These programmes combine:
-
environmental awareness
-
practical creative skills
-
cultural storytelling
-
collaborative learning
This approach reflects a wider shift towards circular design thinking, where materials are reused and reimagined rather than discarded .
A Connected Programme Across Three Age Groups
The Greener Futures Fund has supported a cross-generational programme, reaching participants at different stages of their creative journey.
Each project has been designed to respond to a specific audience while contributing to a shared vision of sustainability through creativity.
EXPLORE THE PROJECTS
Primary Schools: Little Myth Makers
Through Little Myth Makers, primary school children explored storytelling, imagination, and environmental awareness by creating costumes as part of 'Guardians of Luton' for Luton Carnival 2026.
Working with recycled materials, children developed creative confidence while learning how design can respond to environmental challenges.

Further Education: Fashion Lab (Barnfield College)
Through the Fashion Lab: Carnival, Culture & Sustainability programme, Barnfield College students took part in an immersive 5-day creative studio experience.
Students worked collaboratively to design and produce large-scale carnival work and portfolio-ready fashion outcomes, experiencing a full creative production process from concept to campaign.

Adult Programme: Reclaimed Textiles
Through Reclaimed Textiles: Exploration & Practice, adult participants engaged in an experimental pilot programme focused on textile manipulation and upcycling.
This project explored how reclaimed materials could be transformed into innovative surfaces and fashion pieces, while also testing approaches for future workshop delivery.

Across all three programmes, the Greener Futures Fund has supported:
-
the reuse and transformation of textile waste
-
the development of sustainable design skills
-
increased environmental awareness through creative practice
-
real-world creative experiences across different age groups
-
pathways into further creative learning and industry engagement
With the fashion industry producing significant levels of textile waste globally, initiatives that encourage reuse and circular design are increasingly important in reducing environmental impact .
IMPACT
LOOKING FORWARD
Together, these projects demonstrate how sustainability can be embedded into creative education at every level, from early imagination through to industry-facing practice.
Building on this work, S.H.A.C.E will continue to develop programmes that combine creativity, culture, and sustainability, supporting communities to engage with environmental issues through hands-on, meaningful design.
