RECLAIMED TEXTILES: Exploration & Practice
Exploring sustainable materials through hands-on textile experimentation and creative practice

About the Programme
Reclaimed Textiles: Exploration & Practice was an adult-focused pilot programme delivered at the UK Centre for Carnival Arts (UKCCA) as part of the Greener Futures Fund, exploring sustainable textile design through hands-on experimentation.
Developed as a follow-on from previous workshops delivered at the Natural History Museum, the programme built on the use of reclaimed materials, particularly denim from Levi’s jeans salvaged from landfill, to explore new approaches to sustainable textile design. This pilot informed the development of future S.H.A.C.E programmes, shaping how sustainable workshops are delivered across different communities and audiences.
Through hands-on making, participants explored how waste materials could be transformed into high-quality, expressive design outcomes.
The programme also served as an internal research and development phase, testing methods, materials, and delivery approaches in preparation for wider public workshops. It provided valuable insight into how sustainable fashion workshops can be delivered effectively to different audiences while maintaining a strong focus on creativity, accessibility, and environmental awareness.
